3rd Gen Tacoma LED Headlights: Stock vs. Aftermarket vs. Custom Retrofit

3rd Gen Tacoma LED Headlights: Stock vs. Aftermarket vs. Custom Retrof

If you are looking at 3rd-gen Tacoma headlights, you have three real choices: keep the factory housings, buy an off-the-shelf aftermarket assembly, or run a custom retrofit built around a proper projector. The main difference between them is not brightness on paper; it is how the light is shaped and aimed once it leaves the housing. This guide walks through what separates the three, what the options actually do, and how to pick the setup that fits how you use your truck.

The Three Paths for 2016-2023 Tacoma Headlights

Option 1: Keep the Factory Housings

Staying stock is the cheapest path and it takes no work. The limitation is that you are stuck with whatever beam pattern the factory housing produces. Not every 3rd gen Tacoma left the factory with the same setup either. Some trims came with factory LED headlights and some did not, which matters later when you start shopping for replacements.

A common shortcut here is dropping LED bulbs into a housing that was never designed around them. That usually scatters light rather than focusing it, which is the opposite of what you want on a dark road.

Option 2: Off-the-Shelf Aftermarket Assemblies

Prebuilt aftermarket headlights are a step up in appearance and they install quickly. The trade-off is that you take the projector, the shroud style, and the halo behavior exactly as the manufacturer decided. If you want a specific look or a specific beam layout, you are choosing from a short list.

Option 3: Custom Retrofit Headlights

A retrofit means the housing is built around the projector rather than the projector being squeezed into an existing housing. We build our custom retrofit headlights for the 2016-2023 Tacoma in-house using full LED projectors with both low and high beam functions, mounted in new housings. Factory adjustability is retained, so the beam can still be aimed properly without throwing glare at oncoming drivers.

This is the path most owners land on when they want a specific look and a beam pattern they can actually rely on at night.

What a BiLED Projector Actually Does

A projector uses built-in optics inside the body of the unit plus a glass lens to aim and amplify light across long distances. That is the part that matters. Instead of throwing light everywhere and hoping some of it lands on the road, a projector puts a defined cutoff where it belongs.

Two practical results come from that. Glare drops because light stays below the cutoff instead of hitting mirrors and windshields ahead of you. Efficiency improves because more usable illumination comes from the same power draw compared to a traditional halogen reflector headlight.

Our standard TEQ BiLED projector is a 3-inch, 12V unit rated at 38W on low beam and 45W on high beam, running at 5500K with a 50,000-hour rated life. The BiLED design handles both low and high beam from a single unit, similar in function to a traditional H4 bulb.

One note on comparing products: lumens describe total light produced, while lux measures light intensity at a set distance. Lux is the more useful number when you are trying to understand what a headlight will actually do down the road. Our projector guide covers this in more detail.

Build Options on a Custom Tacoma Headlight

Projector Layout

The standard build runs our TEQ BiLED projectors. If you want more high beam output, two quad projector upgrades are available. The multi-high beam projector adds high beam only units, giving you 2 low and 4 high beams per pair. The Mini BiLED upgrade gives you 4 low and 4 high beams per pair. Both upgrades come pre-wired, so no additional wiring work is needed during installation.

Shrouds

A shroud wraps the body of the projector and hides the internals, which is most of what gives a retrofit its finished look. We offer Apollo 1, Apollo 2, Apollo 3, Panemara 1, Panemara 2, and Turbine, plus Mini Gatling for Mini BiLED projectors. Standard finishes are black and chrome, with custom colors available on request. Full comparisons are in our shroud guide.

One compatibility note: the Mini Gatling shroud is not compatible with rear halos.

Halos, Demon Eyes, and Lens Etching

Halos are available in two forms. The standard switchback halo runs white and switches to amber for turn signal function. RGBW halos are Bluetooth controlled and change color. Halos can be placed at the front or the rear of the shroud, and a rear halo backlights the shroud in the pattern of its openings.

Demon eyes add color backlighting behind the projector lens and are offered in several colors, including RGBW. They change the look of the headlight when viewed from outside. They do not change the color of the light the headlight puts on the road.

Lens etching adds a pattern to the glass. Topographic and hexagon designs are standard, and custom artwork works best when the design has well-defined lines.

Fitment and What to Check Before You Order

Our 3rd-gen retrofit headlights fit 2016-2023 Tacomas. If your truck came with factory LED headlights, it will need a conversion harness. Check which setup your truck has before ordering so you get the right parts the first time.

Each set ships as a complete pair: two finished headlight assemblies with new housings, all required wiring harnesses and LED drivers, and installation resources. Install guides are available on our site for reference.

Lead Time, Warranty, and Price

Our 3rd gen Tacoma custom retrofit headlights are $745.00 per pair. Because each set is built to order with your chosen projectors, shrouds, halos, and etching, the current lead time is 12 weeks. Installed parts and wiring are covered by a 2 year warranty.

We also offer a Best Price Guarantee and financing, both detailed on our site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are LED bulbs in stock housings the same as retrofit headlights?

No. A retrofit replaces the optics with a projector designed to aim light. Putting an LED bulb into a housing built for a different light source does not give you a controlled beam pattern.

Will custom headlights blind other drivers?

Our retrofits maintain factory adjustability, which lets the beam be aimed correctly for output without glare toward oncoming traffic. Proper aiming after install is the step that matters most.

Do demon eyes change how bright my headlights are?

No. Demon eyes are backlighting for appearance and do not change headlight output color or function.

Can I pick any shroud with any projector?

Almost. The main exception is Mini Gatling, which is made for Mini BiLED projectors and cannot be run with rear halos.

How long will my set take to arrive?

The current lead time on this build is 12 weeks, since each pair is assembled to your spec rather than pulled off a shelf.
