When it comes to 4Runner rock sliders, bolt-on is the right fit for most builds. Weld-on makes the most sense for older trucks, dedicated trail rigs, and owners who want a permanent, custom setup.
Both styles protect the same thing: your rocker panels. They sit low, run the length of the cab, and are one of the most costly areas of the truck to repair. The difference is how the sliders attach, what the installation takes, and how they live on the truck long-term. Here is how each style works, the trade-offs, and which build needs what.
What Rock Sliders Do on a 4Runner
Rock sliders mount to the frame, not the body, and run along the rocker panels between the front and rear wheels. Because they tie into the frame, they can take a hit that would crush a factory rocker panel.
On and off the trail, sliders handle three jobs:
-
Shield the rocker panels and lower doors from rocks, stumps, and ledges
-
Give the truck a solid surface to slide or pivot on when it drags over an obstacle
-
Work as a sturdy step for reaching a roof rack or helping kids and pets in
Some heavy-duty designs, like the RCI sliders we carry, are also built to support the side of the truck for lifting with a high-lift jack.
How Bolt-On Rock Sliders Work
Bolt-on sliders attach to the frame through factory threaded holes or existing mounting points. A steel mounting plate sits against the frame and spreads the load across multiple bolts. On the RCI bolt-on sliders for the 2010-2024 4Runner, for example, a full-length 1/4-inch frame plate on the passenger side provides up to 15 mounting points.
Many bolt-on sliders are installed with basic hand tools, and several 5th-gen options we carry, like the C4 Fabrication 5th gen sliders, need no drilling or welding at all.
Why Bolt-On Works for Most Builds
-
Installs in a garage or driveway
-
No welding heat on the frame, so the factory frame coating stays intact
-
Can come off later if you sell the truck or change your armor setup
-
Most of the 4th, 5th, and 6th gen sliders we carry are bolt-on, so you get the most choices
Bolt-On Trade-Offs
-
Strength depends on plate design, number of mounting points, and hardware grade
-
Hardware can settle, so check bolt torque after your first few trail runs
-
Some sliders require removing or cutting the plastic rocker trim on certain trims, such as the 5th gen Limited
-
Many 5th gen 4Runner rock sliders come in KDSS and non-KDSS versions, so you need to order the right one
How Weld-On Rock Sliders Work
Weld-on sliders are welded directly to the frame and become a permanent part of the truck. With no bolt joints to shift or loosen, a properly welded slider gives you about as rigid a connection as you can get.
Weld-on sliders often ship as a kit. The True North Fabrications weld-on kit we carry for the 1996-2002 3rd gen 4Runner is a good example. The main slider body comes pre-welded, and the installer welds the feet and mounting plates to the slider and the frame. The legs are cut 2 inches oversized, with recommended cut lengths, angles, and leg spacing included, so the fit can be tuned to your build.
Why Choose Weld-On
-
Permanent, rigid connection with no hardware to maintain
-
Adjustable leg length, angle, and spacing for a custom fit
-
A common route for older 4Runners like the 3rd gen
Weld-On Trade-Offs
-
Requires a skilled welder and proper equipment
-
Removal means cutting them off
-
Welding heat burns off the frame coating near each weld, so those areas need cleaning and recoating
-
Weld points must be solid, clean metal, so frame rust needs to be addressed first

Which Build Needs What
The Daily Driver With Weekend Trail Time
If your 4Runner commutes during the week and sees trails on weekends, go bolt-on. You get real rocker protection without permanent frame changes. Add step or tread plates and choose a flatter angle if the sliders will double as your everyday step.
The Overland and Long-Distance Build
Overland 4Runners carry extra weight and spend long days on remote roads, where a crushed rocker can mean a door that will not close. A heavy-duty bolt-on slider with DOM tubing and a full frame plate is a strong match. DOM (drawn over mandrel) tubing is stronger and more dent resistant than standard ERW tubing.
A rear kickout is worth adding here too. It helps guard the area ahead of the rear tire and helps the truck pivot around trees and rocks.
The Dedicated Trail Rig
If your 4Runner spends more time crawling than commuting, focus on rigidity and clearance. Consider a weld-on kit if one is available for your generation. Otherwise, pick a bolt-on design with many mounting points and an upward angle that tucks the slider up for ground clearance. Pair your sliders with skid plates to cover the underside, too.
The Older 4Runner
For a 3rd gen 4Runner, weld-on is the route we carry, and the adjustable legs let you set the slider to match your build. Before any welding, have the frame checked at the mounting points. Decades of road salt and trail use can leave rust that needs repair first.

Details to Check Before You Order
-
KDSS and XREAS: confirm which your truck has, since slider fitment can differ
-
Trim level: some sliders need the plastic rocker trim removed or cut, and some do not fit certain trims
-
Kickout: decide whether you want the added protection ahead of the rear tire
-
Angle: an upward angle adds clearance, while a flatter angle makes a better step
-
Step or tread plates: a wider, grippier step for kids, pets, and roof rack access
-
Finish: some sliders ship as raw steel and need paint or powder coat before installation to prevent rust
-
Lead time: many sliders are built to order, so check the lead time on the product page
FAQs
Are bolt-on rock sliders strong enough for off-roading?
Yes, when the design is right. A bolt-on slider with a heavy frame plate, quality hardware, and multiple mounting points can handle regular trail use and plenty of rock contact. How the slider is built matters as much as how it mounts.
Can I install 4Runner rock sliders myself?
Most bolt-on sliders can be installed at home with hand tools. Plan on a helper, since a single slider can weigh 60 pounds or more. Weld-on sliders should be installed by a qualified welder.
Do rock sliders replace running boards?
They can. Sliders work as a solid step, and many offer step or tread plates for a wider surface. The difference is that sliders mount to the frame and are built to take hits on the trail.
