Choosing Tacoma rock sliders comes down to four decisions: bolt-on or weld-on, kickout or no kickout, what finish you want, and how long you are willing to wait. Get those four right and the rest is fitment. This guide walks through each one using the sliders we actually stock, so you can order a set that matches your generation, your cab and bed, and how you drive.
What Rock Sliders Actually Do
Rock sliders mount to the frame and protect the rocker panel, the long body section below your doors. As RCI puts it on their product listings, the rocker panel is the most vulnerable area on your vehicle when off-road, as well as one of the most costly to repair. Rocker damage means body work, not a bolt-on replacement.
Frame mounting is what separates a slider from a side step. A slider takes the hit when the truck settles onto an obstacle and lets the truck slide across instead of catching on it.
Bolt-On vs Weld-On Tacoma Rock Sliders
This is the first real decision, and it changes both your price and your install path.
Bolt-on sliders
Bolt-on sliders use the existing frame structure and the hardware included in the kit. Most owners should start here. You can install them at home, and you can remove them later.
Several sets we carry are described as fully bolt-on. C4 Fabrication lists their Rock Runner sliders for the 2005 to 2015 Tacoma as a 100 percent bolt-on application with no cutting or welding required and all hardware included. Cali Raised LED describes their 2024 and newer Tacoma sliders as a 100 percent bolt-on option with no modification required.
One detail worth reading on the C4 Fabrication listing: drilling holes in the bottom of the frame to install additional included hardware is recommended in order to use the sliders as a hi-lift jack point. That drilling is optional and tied to jack point use, not to the basic install.
Weld-on sliders
Weld-on sliders put the mounting plates directly into the frame. You need a welder, or you need to pay for that labor.
The price difference is worth knowing. True North Fabrications offers their 2016 to 2023 3rd Gen Tacoma sliders both ways. The bolt-on version is $899.99, and the weld-on version is $699.99. You save on the part and spend it on labor, unless you weld yourself.
If you run hard technical terrain and expect full vehicle weight on the sliders regularly, weld-on is the stronger connection. For most trail and overland use, a well-built bolt-on set does the job.
Kickout or No Kickout
A kickout is an angled section at the rear of the slider that flares out past the body line to push the rear quarter panel away from obstacles in tight, rocky turns.
True North Fabrications builds kickouts into their 3rd Gen Tacoma sliders in both mounting styles. Cali Raised LED offers their 2024 and newer Tacoma sliders in both Kick Out and No Kick Out configurations at the same price, so the choice is yours at checkout.
Kickouts add width. That is the point and also the trade-off. If your Tacoma sees mostly forest roads and gravel and lives in a tight garage, straight sliders are easier to live with. If you run rock gardens and narrow trails, the kickout earns its space.
Tubing, Gauge, and Wall Thickness
This is where build quality shows up in the specs rather than the photos.
True North Fabrications lists 1.75 inch outside diameter 11 gauge ERW round tubing, 2 inch by 2 inch 11 gauge square tubing, and quarter inch mounting plates and gussets on their 3rd Gen Tacoma sliders, at roughly 85 pounds per pair.
Cali Raised LED lists American 1.75 inch DOM tubing with .120 inch walls on their 24 and newer Tacoma sliders.
C4 Fabrication uses a 2x2 rectangular main rail with 1.75 inch DOM round tubing on the Rock Runner, which comes in at 114 pounds for the pair.
More material means more strength and more weight. That weight adds up fast once you also hang bumpers and a rack on the truck.
Finish Matters More Than You Think
Read the finish line on the product page before you order, because several sets do not arrive ready to install and forget.
C4 Fabrication ships the Rock Runner bare steel. Powder coat is not available, and the listing states the product will need to be painted or powder coated to prevent rusting.
True North Fabrications offers Raw Steel or Satin Black, ships raw by default, and recommends having the sliders powder coated locally after they arrive to avoid shipping damage to the finish.
Cali Raised LED offers Bare Metal or Powdercoat Black, plus separate filler plate options including no filler plate, raw, powdercoat, and bed liner.
If you drive salted winter roads, budget for coating on any set that ships raw.
Lead Times Vary a Lot
Plan your build around this. Current listed lead times on Tacoma sliders range from 3 to 4 weeks on the Cali Raised LED 24 and newer sets, to 8 to 10 weeks on True North Fabrications, to 14 weeks on the C4 Fabrication Rock Runner. If you have a trip on the calendar, check the lead time before you check the price.

Where Sliders Fit in Your Armor Build
Sliders protect the sides and nothing underneath. If you are shopping sliders because you scraped something, look at skid plates at the same time, since the transfer case and fuel tank take hits on the same obstacles that eat rockers. Bumpers usually come next. The full range is in our armor collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are rock sliders necessary on a Tacoma?
Not for pavement and maintained gravel. Once you run rocks, ruts, and ledges, they are the difference between a scrape and body work.
Can I install Tacoma rock sliders myself?
Bolt-on sets, yes. Several listings state no cutting or welding is required and all hardware is included. Weld-on sets need welding equipment.
How much do Tacoma rock sliders cost?
Current sets run from $699.99 for a weld-on kit to $1,450.00 for a heavy-duty bolt-on set, depending on brand, mounting style, and generation.
Do rock sliders come painted?
Not always. Some ship bare or raw steel and need paint or powder coat before they will resist rust. Check the finish options on each product page.
Will they fit my cab and bed?
Not automatically. Many kits list specific Double Cab or Access Cab fitments. Match your exact configuration before ordering.
