Toyota 4Runner Generations Explained

Toyota 4Runner Generations Explained

Few SUVs have a reputation as strong as the Toyota 4Runner. Since its debut in the 1980s, the 4Runner has earned legendary status for its reliability, off-road performance, and rugged design. Over the years, it has evolved from a compact SUV based on the Toyota pickup to a full-fledged adventure rig loved by overlanders, off-roaders, and families alike.

Let’s take a look at the different generations of the Toyota 4Runner and how it has grown into the icon it is today.

**Note: We're focusing on US/Canadian spec vehicles. Other options were available for these vehicles overseas.

1st Generation (1984–1989) – The Original Adventure SUV

The first-generation 4Runner was essentially a Toyota pickup with a fiberglass shell over the bed. It came with removable tops (on early models), manual hubs, and rugged simplicity. Engine options ranged from a 2.4L four-cylinder to a 3.0L V6 later in production.

  • Key Highlights: Removable top (early years), compact size, rugged off-road capability.

  • Fun Facts:

    • 1994+95 models were the only 4Runner produced with a solid front axle
    • 1988 introduced the first V6 available in the 4Runner
    • The 1st Gen was available in a "truck" model that only had front seats. You had to choose the passenger model to get rear seats.

  • Key Highlights: More refined yet still rugged, dedicated SUV platform, strong reliability record.

Final Thoughts

The 4Runner has changed a lot over the years, from a solid axle, zero tech truck to a comfortable, tech laden SUV. While the new 6th Gen is controversial, the 4Runner desperately needed an update after 14 years and was far behind on technology. Which generation of 4Runner is your favorite?
